Highlights this week

Somewhere in Brussels, small children are sticking toilet rolls together to make a delightful gift for Fathers’ Day this Sunday. Keep the smile on your face and hopefully you’ll get a great breakfast or brunch as well! Some Flemish farms are offering papas a day out at a farm; the nearest to Brussels is in Meise.

It’s the turn of Brussels and Wallonia to celebrate European archaeological day, in best Belgian-style by doing it at a different weekend from Flanders. You can visit the cathedral crypt or cellars under the Grand Place. Be aware that many of the exhibits - like the Coudenberg and the Bourse - are also available year-round. In Wallonia, the Préhistomuseum near Liège seems to have the most child-friendly program.

The World Cup starts this week although the local excitement only gets going next week when Belgium plays its first match against Egypt on 15 June.

This weekend in festivals: Schaerbeek has the Mosaik comedy theatre festival. Woluwe Saint-Pierre’s parc de l’Amitié has a guinguette - stories, food, face-painting, street theatre - on Saturday. Watermael-Boitsfort’s La Vénerie has a garden party with theatre shows. Auderghem’s Rouge-Cloître has a summer festival, Forest has family festival Zondag Atomix. The Cinquantenaire park has a New European Bauhaus energy efficiency festival until Saturday. Woluwe Shpping Center has a sport week.
For the brave who love it hot and spice, there’s a Master of Peppers festival in Laeken on Saturday.

Travel alert for Sunday: The Bxl Tour bike race will disrupt traffic around the city.

Times, dates and age ratings in the links below for paid subscribers along with a very full programme of theatre shows and workshops as well as a Venetian parade, magic lantern cinema, edible flowers and two amazing (and huge) English-language book sales in Kraainem and Everberg.
